Karen Fisher Attachment-based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist UKCP Registered

A warm welcome to my counselling and psychotherapy practices in Hastings & St Leonards and Highbury & Islington...

Thank you for visiting my website - I hope you find what you are looking for. I am a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, working in private practice in Hastings & St Leonards on Sea (East Sussex) and Highbury & Islington (North London).

Ongoing Covid response: I am currently working online with clients by video call (Zoom) and also by phone.

My four year professional psychotherapy training at The Bowlby Centre in London was in the attachment-based approach pioneered by John Bowlby. It emphasises our need for others and the impact on us when early relationships are insecure, dangerous or abandoning.

'…the human psyche, like human bones, is strongly inclined towards self-healing. The psychotherapist’s job, like that of the orthopaedic surgeon, is to provide the conditions in which self-healing can best take place.'

I am an Attachment-based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist based in St Leonards on Sea and I am committed to providing psychotherapy in a warm, empathic and non-judgemental environment. By providing this secure base, clients have the opportunity to share experiences and feelings they may not have been able to talk about before. A secure, therapeutic relationship makes it possible for people to explore the impact of important relationships and mourn past losses - so that healing of early experiences of misattunement, separation and trauma can take place.

‘There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.’

I am experienced in helping a wide range of clients seeking counselling and psychotherapy, who have experienced difficulties with:

  • Loss, bereavement, relationship breakdown
  • Addictions, eating problems, self-harm, phobias, obsessions
  • Impact of domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, trauma
  • Confusion about identity
  • Anxiety, stress, panic attacks
  • Feeling afraid, in crisis, or in a state of breakdown
  • Impact of racism, homophobia, oppression, discrimination
  • Experiencing anxiety, depression, or suicidal feelings
  • Feeling empty, lonely, abandoned, unable to make lasting relationships
  • Difficulties in family relationships

Attachment-based psychotherapy has at its core an understanding of the importance of relationships to human growth and development throughout life. When we feel alone, or relationships go wrong in childhood or adulthood, our ability to manage our lives may be disrupted or thrown into crisis. Secure and supportive relationships enable us to develop a sense of who we are.
